Options for my next 20% Time Project

My first instinct when learning about the 20% project was that I don't have time to do this.  My time is in high demand.  The more I contemplated this the more excited I became.  I have the same time as any other human on the planet, still 24 hours in a day.  I will have to be more exact in how I use that time.  So here's to me!!!

Family History/ Genealogy
This was my first inspiration.  I have always wanted to do genealogy.  Family is very important to me and understanding where I come from and who has contributed to my current well-being is very interesting to me.  I know that this is a very knowledge based goal, but the passion to understand will drive the activity.  One aspect of this will be to publish the stories told by my grandmother, who lived with me the last 5 months of her life.

Questions:
Where do I start with my genealogy?
Which line is in need to more information?
What human resources can I use?
What digital tools can I use to help me?
What tools can I find/ use at the genealogical library?
How can I use census reports to find my ancestors?
How do I find out more than birth, marriage, and death      dates?
How can I best represent the information I find?
How can I turn personal information of an ancestor into       a format that my children can benefit from?
How can I include my children in my search?

Learning to play the Cello
My second choice would be to learn to play the cello.  All of my children play woodwinds, horns and/ or the piano.  I love the cello.  I love the feeling cello music creates.  It pulls at the heart.
My goal would be to learn Twinkle/ Twinkle Little Star

Questions:
How do I make sound on the cello?
How do I hold/ strum a cello?
Where can I learn this?
Do I need people to teach me?
Can I learn from online sources?
Where do I find music/ How do I read it?
Is cello music a different scale than piano music?
How do I tune a cello?
How/ where would I perform?

Hi Tonya,

These are both great ideas! The genealogy would fit this assignment well, because the computer is a perfect fit - my parents have done a lot of genealogy research on our family, and almost all of it is done on-line. They've even started communicating with distant relatives they found on-line. Learning the cello would be fantastic, too. I know what you mean about the sound, that low pitch is just so gorgeous. I think you might need to have an in-person teacher, though, in order to get the most out of the lessons. When my children and I have taken lessons, it's really helpful to have a live person who can help you with positions and sounds, etc. Can't wait to see where you go from here!

Hi Tonya,
Don't know how much my comment will help but I can really see the interest and want to learn genealogy. But I think it would also be beneficial to lean an instrument. Maybe even have your kids play with you once you have the song down. Well good luck to you and can't wait to see what you pick.

As a mom of 8 kids, finding time to follow my interests is rare.  My interests have become the baseball game, concert, basketball game, scout activity, or maybe driving a field trip.  It is time to follow my passion.  With this 20%time project, I will gather my family in a different way.  Time for family history.
